DIDM Wishes You All A Very Happy Mahavir Jayanti

History and Significance of Mahavir Jayanti

Lord Mahavira was the son of the emperor of the ancient kingdom Vaishali - King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. His childhood name was Vardhman. At the age of 30, Mahavira chose to give up all his material possessions and embraced a life of wandering asceticism in pursuit of spiritual awakening.

There is some disagreement among Jains regarding the exact birth date of Lord Mahavira. Swetambar Jains believe that he was born in 599 BC, while Degambar Jains believe that he was born in 615 BC.

However, according to the Hindu calendar, Lord Mahavira's birth anniversary falls on the 13th day of the month of Chaitra.

The Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated around the world by Jains with great enthusiasm. They fast, meditate, visit temples on this day, provide help to the poor, and carry out rath yatras to celebrate the great occasion.

The meaning of Tirthankara in Jainism refers to the 24 divine great men who did great penance and attained enlightenment. These great men have completely conquered their senses and emotions.
