The Surprising History of International Women’s Day

The impulse for establishing an International Women's Day can be traced back to a walkout by thousands of garment workers in New York City in February 1908, when they marched through the city to protest their working conditions. Like now, these women worked in less organized workplaces [than their male colleagues], in the bottom echelons of the garment business, for poor incomes, and were subjected to sexual harassment.

Around World War I in 1914, most attempts at social reforms were halted.

The theme for Women’s Day 2022 is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.   The climate crisis has the greatest impact on women and girls because it exacerbates existing gender inequities and puts women's lives and livelihoods in jeopardy. Women around the world rely on natural resources more than men, but have less access to them, and often bear disproportionate responsibility for securing the necessities, adding that women are key drivers of change in climate adaptation, reducing the severity, and solutions.
